Currently there is a severe shortage of qualified rock engineers which is placing immense pressure on mining operations. Although skills shortages are being experienced worldwide in different industries, including the mining sector, the challenge is significant specifically for this industry. Richard Fifer believes that one fact for sure is the significant growth of the industry which is creating a demand for qualified geologist and engineers that must be met. A proactive marketing of careers campaign is actually taking place in places of the world like South Africa in response to this need. Institutions such as the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are developing programs to inform students around the country of their option to enroll in careers where they are able to find jobs in the future in the mining industry.
